The three teacher unions in Ghana have given the government until midday on Thursday, September 24, 2026, to resolve outstanding issues concerning the payment of promotion salaries and arrears owed affected teachers.
The unions — the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT-Ghana) — issued the warning in an urgent notice to teachers dated Tuesday, September 22, 2026.

According to the unions, the 2025 promotion placements, together with the payment of arrears, have not been fully effected.
They said this amounts to a violation of an agreement reached with the government to automatically place all affected teachers by the end of September 2026.
The unions said the situation had caused frustration and anger among teachers across the country, particularly because of delays in resolving what they described as outstanding concerns.
Among the other issues cited are the renewal of the Collective Agreement and payment of the Deprived Area Allowance, among others.
Unions warn of possible action
The teacher unions warned that if the outstanding issues were not addressed by midday on Thursday, they would no longer be able to restrain teachers from taking action.
The duty bearers should take full responsibility. This is not a threat but a promise,” the unions stated.
They, however, directed teachers to remain calm and follow official directives from their leadership.
They also urged teachers to participate in any actions that may subsequently be announced by the union leadership.
The notice was signed by Thomas T. Musah, General Secretary of GNAT; Jacob Anaba, President of NAGRAT; and King Ali Awudu, President of PRETAG.
