When I was seven years old, I lost a part of my body, but that didn’t define me. I knew I had to make a difference in the lives of others like me.”
The Project
Smiles of Hope Organization offers peer counseling, support groups, and skills training programs to help amputees regain confidence and independence. The project has positively impacted over 1,000 amputees, providing emotional support, economic empowerment, and legal assistance.
Valeria’s organization has established partnerships with prominent hospitals, including Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Tema General Hospital, Ridge Hospital, and 37 Military Hospital. They have also acquired a dedicated office space to enhance operations and service delivery.
Impact
The project has had a significant impact on the lives of amputees. Over 300 individuals have benefited from peer counseling, while more than 700 have participated in support groups. Additionally, over 40 individuals have been trained in skills such as detergent making, bead crafting, and agribusiness. 60 people, including caregivers of amputees, have received assistance.
Challenges
Despite the success, Valeria faces challenges, including limited funding, relying on a single donor, and insufficient resources to train more amputees and extend services to other regions. Her small team is managing a high caseload, making it difficult to collaborate effectively with other facilities.
Future Plans
Valeria plans to expand medical outreach programs beyond the Greater Accra region and provide mobility aids to amputees. She aims to extend services to other regions across Ghana, making a broader impact on the lives of amputees.
