The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that the United States has reversed its visa restrictions on Ghana.
This implies that Ghanaians are now eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges.
We are pleased that months of high-level diplomatic negotiations have led to a successful outcome,” said Minister Ablakwa. “It’s good to see healthier and stronger Ghana-USA relations.”
The US had imposed visa restrictions on Ghana and other countries in July 2025, limiting affected citizens to three-month single-entry visas. The restrictions were attributed to issues with visa overstays, particularly among students.
In a bilateral meeting at the UN General Assembly, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, directly communicated the reversal of visa restrictions to Minister Ablakwa.
Ghanaians can now apply for five-year multiple-entry visas, facilitating easier travel to the US. The reversal also includes other enhanced consular privileges, promoting stronger diplomatic relations between Ghana and the US. Minister Ablakwa credited the successful outcome to months of high-level diplomatic negotiations between the two countries.
