The Kumasi Airport has extended its operating hours from 9 pm to 11 pm, a move aimed at enhancing economic growth and development in the Ashanti Region.
According to Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, this development is a step in the right direction, and he hopes to see 24-hour flights soon after the expansion of the runway to accommodate bigger aircraft is completed.

This development aligns with Dr. Amoakohene’s vision for the region’s economic growth and development. The extension of the airport’s operating hours is expected to boost business activities, create jobs, and stimulate economic development in the region.
Kumasi Airport, recently renamed as Prempeh I International Airport, which servers the Ashanti Region and other parts of Ghana has undergone several renovations and expansion projects.
The latest phase involves extending the runway to 2,320 meters to accommodate bigger aircraft, with an estimated completion date by the end of 2025. This expansion aims to enhance the airport’s capacity to handle international flights, making it a significant aviation hub in West Africa.
Currently, the airport is served by two domestic carriers; Africa World Airlines and Passion Air.
The most popular route from Kumasi Airport is to Accra, with multiple flights operating daily.
Prempeh I International Airport handled over 453,201 passengers in 2024, making it the second-busiest airport in Ghana after Kotoka International Airport in Accra.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene, a medical professional and youth leader, was appointed as the Ashanti Regional Minister in January 2025. He has been actively engaging with local communities and stakeholders to identify key areas of development and growth in the region.
