Leading mining companies in Ghana have been recognised for outstanding safety performance and operational excellence at the 2025 Mine Performance Awards organised by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
The awards ceremony, held alongside the launch of the 2026 Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition, celebrated companies and individuals who demonstrated exceptional commitment to workplace safety, environmental standards and emergency preparedness within the mining industry.
Asante Gold Bibiani Ltd emerged as the winner in the “Best Mine Based on Occupational Injury Statistics” category, with Asanko Gold Mine Ltd placing second and Ghana Manganese Company Ltd taking third position.
In the “Best Improved Mine” category, Ghana Manganese Company Ltd secured first place, followed by Asante Gold Bibiani Ltd in second position, while AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine placed third.
For the “Best Safe Mine Based on Mine Safety, Health and Environmental Audit” category, Abosso Goldfields Limited took the top award, ahead of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Ltd and Golden Star Wassa Ltd.
Golden Star Wassa Ltd also won the “Best Mine Team Based on Safety and First Aid” award, with Asanko Gold Mine Ltd and AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Ltd placing second and third respectively.
In the community-focused category, Asanko Gold Mine Ltd was adjudged winner of the “Best Community Team Based on Safety and First Aid” award. Abosso Goldfields Limited placed second, while AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine took third position.
Individual honours were also presented to safety professionals for their contributions to safety management and training in the industry. James German of Golden Star Wassa Ltd received the Safety Manager Award, while Samuel Kojo Ansah and Evans Newman, both of Golden Star Wassa Ltd, won the Team Manager and Trainer awards respectively.
Golden Star Wassa Ltd additionally received a special recognition award as a three-time winner at the competition.
Speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Kenneth Ashigbey, reiterated the industry’s commitment to achieving zero fatalities and strengthening safety standards across mining operations.
Safety remains the foundation of responsible mining,” Dr. Ashigbey said. “No production target, operational milestone, or business objective is worth the loss of a single life.”
The 2026 Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition was officially launched under the theme: “Safety First, Safety Always.”
