The Institute of Packaging Ghana (IOPG) has joined the global packaging industry to mark the maiden World Packaging Day, highlighting the sector’s growing importance to food security, industrial development, international trade and environmental sustainability.
The inaugural global observance, initiated by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) under the theme “Packaging Makes Modern Life Possible,” seeks to position packaging as a strategic enabler of modern economies rather than simply a container for products.
The IOPG said quality packaging plays a critical role in protecting food, extending shelf life, reducing waste and strengthening supply chains, while helping businesses meet quality standards and compete in domestic and international markets.
The global observance focuses on four areas: packaging for progress, packaging against food waste, packaging and economic growth, and packaging and sustainability. The areas reflect the sector’s contribution to health, safety, trade, innovation and the circular economy.
In a press statement signed by Kofi Essuman, Vice President of Education at the WPO, the IOPG said it will commemorate the day later in September with a virtual Pan-African Knowledge-Sharing Forum on the theme “Shaping the Future of African Packaging through Innovation, Sustainability, and Intra-African Trade.”
The forum, organised in collaboration with the African Packaging Organisation, is expected to bring together policymakers, manufacturers, supply-chain leaders, academics and other industry stakeholders to examine how innovation and sustainable packaging can improve product quality and strengthen the competitiveness of African businesses.
The IOPG said the forum will also provide a platform to discuss practical approaches to improving packaging and development standards, particularly those that can help Ghanaian products compete more effectively in regional and international markets.
The institute’s participation in the maiden World Packaging Day comes as the global industry increasingly focuses on sustainable materials, eco-design, circular-economy solutions and responsible production as key elements of future economic growth.
