As the world marks World Oxygen Day, healthcare stakeholders are calling for increased investment in medical oxygen infrastructure to ensure reliable access to this life-saving commodity.
According to Eng. Kofi Owusu Asamoah, CEO BKANG Group, “Medical oxygen is not a luxury; it is a human right. By working together, we can ensure that no child, mother, or patient loses their life because of lack of access to this essential medicine.”
Despite progress made in expanding access to oxygen in Ghana and West Africa, challenges persist, including shortages of oxygen cylinders, concentrators, and trained biomedical staff. These gaps put vulnerable patients at risk, particularly children, pregnant women, and those in intensive care.
To address these challenges, stakeholders are urging regional leaders, policymakers, and international partners to invest in sustainable oxygen infrastructure, support capacity building, and promote cross-border collaboration.
By recognizing oxygen as an essential drug and strengthening healthcare systems, West Africa can improve equitable access to medical oxygen for over 400 million people and establish regional self-sufficiency in oxygen supply.
As the world celebrates World Oxygen Day, it’s clear that medical oxygen is a lifeline worth saving.
