The Local Government and Rural Development Select Committee has expressed interest in reintroducing the City Response Team to help improve sanitation management in Ghana.
This move is part of the committee’s efforts to partner with private companies, such as Jospong Group, to address the country’s sanitation challenges.
Hon. Sawyerr Maame Pokuah Queenstar, MP for Agona East and Chairperson of the Committee Speaking to the press during a visit by the Parliament Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development to Zoomlion’s IRECOP plant in Dambai, Oti Region, emphasized the City Response Team will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with sanitation regulations
She noted there was the need for effective enforcement of sanitation laws. “We already have those bylaws. It needs to be enforced,” she said.
The City Resposense Team, which was set up by the Greater Accra Regional Coodinating Council and were trained by the military, played crucial roll in the success of the Operation Clean Your Frontage initiative.
City Response Team were tasked with the sensitisation of people on the need to change their attitude, adopt practices to keep the environment clean, assist the security agencies, monitor and implement sanitation and road traffic regulations.
The Committee’s decision to partner with Just Pong Group comes after a site viewing and presentations showcasing their sanitation management capabilities. Hon. Sawyerr praised the group’s efforts, saying,
We are impressed with everything we’ve seen, and we hope to come together and support as a government, as a committee, as parliament, so that they can go ahead and serve Mother Ghana.”
The committee will work with Jospong Group to develop a plan for implementing the sanitation management project. Hon. Sawyerr noted that the group will need to address challenges and ensure effective enforcement of sanitation laws. The partnership is expected to have a positive impact on Ghana’s environment and economy.
Solomon Denyo, Managing Director of Zoomlion Private Services Limited, welcomed the Parliament Select Committee’s proposal to reintroduce a sanitation task force to improve sanitation management in Ghana, adding that this initiative aligns with Zoomlion’s long-standing advocacy for a comprehensive approach to address Ghana’s sanitation challenges.
Denyo emphasized the need for behavioral change and enforcement of sanitation bylaws, stating that “every household should be able to get a bin, so that waste can be organized and treated properly.”
He addeded the City Response Team will play a crucial role in promoting behavioral change and enforcing sanitation regulations.
Denyo expressed Zoomlion’s willingness to collaborate with the government to implement effective sanitation management practices.
We will discuss with our management team how best we can reach out to the central government through the various assemblies to implement the issues we’ve pointed out,” he said.
The Local Government and Rural Development Select Committee is aslo expected to visit other Jospong operations in Ho n the Volta region to assess sanitation operations and engage with local authorities.
