The Food and Drugs Authority has cautioned the public, particularly young people, against using bitters and other substances as sexual aphrodisiacs, stressing that no such products, whether alcoholic or non-alcoholic, have been approved for that purpose in Ghana.
According to the Authority, there is a growing trend among the youth involving the use of unprescribed medications, herbal mixtures, alcoholic drinks, and bitters in an attempt to enhance sexual performance and boost energy levels.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News on Thursday, March 19, on the sidelines of a workshop for herbal manufacturers and the Traditional Healers Association in the Ashanti Region, the Ashanti Regional Head of the FDA, Nathaniel Nana Kwabena Nkrumah, expressed concern over the increasing misuse of these substances and warned of serious long-term health consequences.
The youth should desist from thinking that these bitters and alcoholic products provide better energy. Real energy comes from a healthy mindset and proper nutrition, not from bitters. No bitters in this country have been approved for use as a sexual aphrodisiac,” he stated.
He further cautioned herbal medicine producers and media outlets against promoting or advertising such products as aphrodisiacs, warning that such claims are misleading and potentially harmful.
