Newmont, the world’s leading gold company, has issued a statement denying allegations that its Ahafo North mine is responsible for the pollution of River Tano in Ghana’s Ahafo Region.
Newmont wishes to state, without equivocation, that its operational activities do not pollute the Tano River,” the company said. “The company operates to the highest environmental and water management standards, often beyond what is legally mandated and expected.”
The company is cooperating with investigations by relevant stakeholders, including the Water Resources Commission and Environmental Protection Agency, into the cause of the pollution. A joint investigation by the agencies found no evidence linking Newmont’s operations to the pollution.
Investigations undertaken so far have included interviews, site visits, and review of documents,” Newmont said.
A separate field visit was undertaken by youth leaders and Assemblymen of the mine’s host communities, who have since publicly published their observations, essentially noting that they found no evidence of Newmont’s operations impacting the Tano River.”
Newmont has pledged to continue cooperating with investigative bodies and maintaining its commitment to responsible mining practices.
