MTN Foundation has donated 150 baby hampers to new mothers at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital as part of a nationwide initiative to distribute 700 baby hampers across 30 hospitals.
Speaking to the media, Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Customer Service and Sustainability Officer at MTN expressed her team’s delight in giving back to the community
She said, “This is a show of appreciation to our customers and stakeholders who’ve been supporting us over the years. Today is Boxing Day, a day of giving, and at MTN, that’s what we like to do.”
She continued, “We want to celebrate the joy of new life and motherhood with these beautiful ladies who’ve welcomed new babies into the world. It’s a special moment for them, and we’re honored to be a part of it”
The baby hampers are packed with essentials for newborns, including diapers, clothes, and toys, and are aimed at supporting new mothers during the critical first few months of motherhood.
Wiafe used the occasion to urge customers to be safe during the holidays, saying, “Be safe on our roads and protect yourselves. This is a time that fraudsters will take the opportunity to defrost. Please do not share your Momo pin with anyone. We will never call you to ask you to share your Momo pin.”
She warned customers to be vigilant and not fall prey to scammers, adding, “If you receive a call asking for your Momo pin or personal information, please do not respond. Call our official number, 0244300000, to verify.”
Wiafe thanked customers for their loyalty and support, saying, “To all our customers, thank you for your loyalty. Be safe and enjoy the festive season.”
Receiving the donation, Dr. Charles Takyi, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, expressed gratitude to MTN Ghana Foundation, saying, “This is not the first time they’re doing it and we appreciate every bit of whatever they do to the department. They helped us with our second floor, which was a major development at the labour ward. And every year, they’ve been a backbone for the department of obstetrics and gynaecology.”
Dr. Takyi highlighted the challenges faced by the department, including infrastructure and equipment needs, saying, “We have a lot of needs in terms of infrastructure, equipment, and logistics. We always ask and we’ll be happy when this form of support comes to help the department, in addition to what the government is doing.”
He noted that the hospital recorded 15 newborns on Christmas day and wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, saying, “On behalf of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, we say thank you to MTN Ghana Foundation for this gesture. We hope you continue to provide quality service to mothers.”
One of the recipients, Akweley Ankra, couldn’t contain her gratitude. “I’m so thankful to MTN Ghana Foundation for this wonderful gift. It’s a big help, and I’m really grateful. I also want to thank the hospital for giving me a safe delivery – the care has been excellent.” Akweley, a first-time mom, beamed with joy as she held her newborn baby boy.
The donation is part of MTN Ghana Foundation’s efforts to support healthcare initiatives in Ghana.
