A devastating incident which reportedly occurred on January 8, 2025, at Newmont’s Ahafo South mines, where police officers protecting the site shot and killed three people, injuring others. The victims, believed to be indigenous to Acherensua in the Ahafo region, were allegedly engaged in illegal mining activities on the concession.

Wacam, a human rights organization, has expressed extreme concern over the incident, citing excessive use of force by security agencies. The organization argues that the response was disproportionate to the allegation of trespassing, leading to unnecessary deaths and injuries.

This incident has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation among the youth, traditional authorities, and neighboring communities. Many stakeholders, including civil society organizations and human rights defenders, have raised concerns about the growing tensions in mining communities, particularly those affected by Newmont’s Ahafo mines.

Wacam emphasizes that this incident is not an isolated event, but rather part of a systemic trend of insecurity and harassment in mining communities. The organization points to a 2008 report by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), which highlighted human rights abuses in the mining sector, including harassment and inhumane treatment of alleged illegal miners and community members.

Wacam is calling on the government to take urgent action, including:

  • Independent investigations into the underlying insecurity and human rights violations in mining communities
  • Investigation into police conduct and the incident that led to the deaths and injuries
  • Review of security protocols in mining areas to recognize the rights of affected communities
  • Holding mining companies accountable for protecting the rights of individuals in mining communities

The organization stresses that the 1992 Constitution of Ghana guarantees the right to life and fair trial, and that extrajudicial actions are unacceptable. Wacam demands justice and accountability for the victims and their families, and calls for a more humane and rights-respecting approach to addressing illegal mining activities.
