Renowned Educator Emphasizes Parental Love and Guidance at Mendsland Graduation Ceremony
Prof. Michael Subbey, a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Early Childhood Education at the University of Education Winneba, has stressed the significance of parents providing love, time, and attention to their children, acknowledging that material provisions alone are insufficient.
Prof. Subbey highlighted the importance of open communication, trust, and a shared vision in building strong parent-child relationships.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of Mends Academy in Bujumbura in the central region in August 3, 2024, he emphasized that parents who demonstrate love, care, and commitment serve as role models, sharing valuable life lessons and fostering an environment where children feel comfortable seeking guidance.
The esteemed educator, who was speaking on the theme “Building Futures Together, the Power of Parental Support”, urged parents to recognize and celebrate their children’s successes, cultivate consistent learning habits, and provide emotional support.
He also encouraged parents to observe and guide their children, investing in extra tuition and practical knowledge to equip them for future success.
Prof. Subbey cautioned against forcing children to follow in their parents’ footsteps, instead allowing them to discover their own paths. He emphasized the need for effective and efficient support, which has a lifelong impact on children’s confidence and academic success.
In a poignant remark, Prof. Subbey noted that “children may forget what their parents say, but they will remember how they made them feel”.
He urged parents to be true role models, guiding their children through deeds rather than just words, and to be mindful of the influence they have on their children’s lives.
The Headmaster of Mendsland Preparatory School, Samuel Yeboah, emphasized the vital role of parental investment and assistance in learners’ academic performance.
He stressed that students who receive support from their families tend to excel more than those who lack such backing.
Yeboah highlighted that parents are not just passive observers but active participants in their children’s development, laying the foundation for academic achievements and higher aspirations.
This collaborative approach fosters stronger student motivation, encouraging learners to take ownership of their education,” he noted.
The Headmaster also underscored the importance of moral support for teachers, emphasizing that a united front between home and school is essential for a child’s academic growth. He emphasized that schools provide critical thinking skills, but parental involvement is crucial in reinforcing these skills.
Yeboah concluded by stressing that the partnership between home and school is indispensable, and both entities should work hand-in-hand to support the child’s academic journey. By doing so, learners will benefit from a comprehensive approach that nurtures their intellectual, emotional, and social development.
