NBSSI on-course to support market fire victims

The National Board for Small Scales Industries (NBSSI) has begun the assessment process for traders at the Odawna market and pedestrian mall in Accra whose properties were destroyed by fire last week.

The registration process which began over the weekend have captured about 2,000 victims already, who will begin the process to access support from the government as announced by President Akufo Addo.

The NBSSI has been mandated by President Akufo-Addo to activate a programme that will ensure that all victims of the inferno received some form of support.

As part of the process, the NBSSI has started with the engagement and registered about 2,000 victims.

Executive Director, Kosi Yankey Ayeh told Joy Business that the government is poised to revive all businesses that were affected by the fire.

We are going to support them [traders] in all forms, depending on what the assessment comes out with, but we need to have credible data to rely on in order to serve everyone” she noted.

Registration for the traders whose shops were razed by fire is expected to end Friday November 27, barring any challenge.

Data from the NBSSI showed that 1,743 victims as of Monday, November 23 have registered with the NBSSI.

After the registration, the NBSSI team will do an assessment on the applications to evaluate their businesses and come out with the support to be provided.

The Executive Director expressed confidence that with the progress of work done so far, the NBSSI would be able to give financial support to the affected persons before the end of the year.

Municipal Director for the National Disaster Management Organisation in the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly Daniel Odei Appiah disclosed that majority of the victims have already been captured on its assessment process and ready to be provided with assistance.

He assured  the traders that it will reconstruct a modernized market facility next year, latest by March.

Meanwhile, the source of the market fire which destroyed in excess of millions of goods belonging to these traders is yet to be identified.
