MTN contributed GHS2.6bn in taxes in 2020 – CEO

MTN Ghana paid approximately GHc2.6 billion in taxes to the government of Ghana in 2020.

The figure represents 6% of total tax received by the government by a single corporate institution. The tax components include withholding tax on suppliers, withholding tax on dividend, communications service tax, corporate tax, levies and duties,

The Chief Executive Officer of the Company, Selorm Adadevoh announced this at this year’s Editor’s forum in Accra on Friday August 20, 2021.

In 2009, MTN Ghana was presented with a Platinum award by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for the company’s commitment towards tax payment in Ghana.

The Platinum award by GRA is the highest award under the large tax payer category. The award symbolizes tax payers’ compliance level with all tax laws in Ghana and the highest contributor to tax revenue in the large tax payer category. MTN Ghana was the only recipient of the Platinum award.

Adadevoh, however, noted that the company will not relax following this mile stone rather, they will continue to look for opportunities to improve on what they do.

Regarding the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Adadevoh said there is need to put the right technological infrastructure in place in order to succeed.

The AfCFTA is a free trade area founded in 2018, with trade commencing as of 1 January 2021. It was created by the African Continental Free Trade Agreement among 54 of the 55 African Union nations. The free-trade area is the largest in the world in terms of the number of participating countries since the formation of the World Trade Organization.

Adadevoh said “We see an open of borders, trade, services across borders.

One of the things that will make the countries do well is technology. Ghana’s is desire to become a digital economy is great but we don’t get there without infrastructure.”

He assured that MTN will make Ghana the technology centre for AFTCFA.
