Members of a joint Parliamentary Select Committees have expressed satisfaction with the on-going construction works at the Tamale Integrated Recycling and Composting Plant (IRECOP).
The Chairman of Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi, speaking on behalf of the MPs expressed the satisfaction with the level of work done within the short period of commencement of work.
The entire project is 20% complete but the sub-structure is about 60% complete. The integrated solid and liquid waste treatment plant is expected to be operation by August this year.
The 32 Member Committee made up of Local Government, Environment, Science and Technology, and Works and Housing are on a working visit to enable the MPs to gather firsthand knowledge on the progress of work on the IRECOP project being executed by waste management giants, Zoomlion Ghana limited in all the 16 regions.
According to the Chairman, the visit was to ensure that there is value for work in the construction of the waste treatment facilities.
What we want to see at the end of the tour in the region is to complement what we have done and to make sure that the contractor ensures that the challenges of sanitation will be resolved”, Hon. Gyamfi emphasized.

Hon. Gyamfi who was also impressed with the management of the Tamale landfill site said unlike the landfill at Takoradi where some of the MPs were not enthused about how the landfill was being managed, the Tamale landfill is being properly managed.
When we went to Takoradi some of the members were not happy with how the landfill was being managed. We are now in Tamale and what we see here is very encouraging”, he stressed.
He therefore commended Zoomlion for the level of work executed so far and urged the company to complete the project on schedule.
We commend Zoomlion for taking up this challenge. It’s a big challenge and for Zoomlion to collaborate with government to undertake this project I think that we should commend them”.
On his part, the Manager of Waste Landfills, Peter Dagadu assured the MP’s of the company’s commitment to complete the project on schedule.
He revealed that the 5,600sqm project includes waste water treatment facility and will also process up to 800 tonnes of solid waste daily.
This is a modular project so we can add another line to process more waste”, Dagadu noted.
He indicated that the company will resort to what he described as motorized tricycles to augment the collection of waste for recycling.
The multi-million-dollar project, which will also process medical waste in the region and have a residual landfill site, is also expected to produce charcoal and biogas to power plants.
