The Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is set for a major transformation as the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) rolls out four flagship infrastructure projects to enhance capacity, efficiency and passenger experience.
The upgrades come as passenger traffic and aircraft movements continue to rise, with the airport now served by 24 international airlines.

Repurposing of Terminal 2
One of the projects to be undertaken is the redevelopment of Terminal 2 to serve both domestic and international travellers.
The upgrade includes a redesigned meeters-and-greeters area, expanded commercial space and new restaurants to ease pressure on Terminal 3 during peak periods.
Construction of a Multi-Storey Car Park
To complement this, a multi-storey car park will be constructed at Terminal 3, to increase its capacity from 513 to 2,000 vehicles.
The development will also integrate retail and hotel facilities, directly supporting government’s 24-hour economy policy by creating round-the-clock jobs in construction, car park management and hospitality.
An alternate parking space nearby will be provided during construction. Once completed, this project will not only expand capacity and improve traffic circulation but also generate round-the-clock jobs from construction, to car park operations, to hotel services – bringing the 24-hour economy policy to life at KIA.
Connecting Concourse Between Terminals 2 and 3
KIA will also see the construction of a connecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3, designed to reduce transfer times and improve passenger flow.
Currently, passengers moving between the terminals must either walk outdoors or take a vehicle.
The concourse will feature commercial outlets, boarding bridges, lounges, escalators, and travellators—bringing KIA in line with global best practices.
Runway Overlay Project
Already, work has commenced on rehabilitating the main runway at KIA. This project will enhance surface quality, extend the runway’s service life and ensure continued compliance with international safety standards.
The upgrades include widening the runway from 45 meters to 60 meters, and installing modern LED aeronautical ground lighting to enhance operational safety and efficiency.
Once completed within the next 2–5 years, these projects are expected to deliver a world-class travel experience, drive aviation-led growth, and reinforce the reputation of KIA as a competitive regional hub.
