JICA Donates Automated RNA Extraction Machine and Extraction Kits to Noguchi Institute

In response to latest developments in the fight against COVID-19, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has donated automated RNA extraction machine and extraction kits to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), University of Ghana, Legon. This support is provided as a part of JICA technical cooperation entitled: “Surveillance and Laboratory Support for Emerging Pathogens of Public Health Importance in Ghana”.

JICA has been working with NMIMR and Ghana Health Service to establish research-linked surveillance model by strengthening research capacity and its linkage with the surveillance and control for infectious diseases of public health concern.

Japan and Ghana have long-lasting relationship through NMIMR. Therefore, JICA is committed ensuring the safety of frontline laboratory technicians and increase the capacity of the tests for COVID-19 in order to protect people in Ghana and in the sub-region at large.

Mr. ARAKI Yasumichi, Chief Representative of JICA Ghana Office expressed delight for the pivotal role NMIMR has played in the fight against COVID-19 which has drawn international recognition and applause. The Chief Representative also praised the long-lasting and impactful relationship that has existed between JICA and the NMIMR over the years.

The Director of NMIMR, Professor Abraham Kwabena Anang expressed appreciation for the timeliness and significance of the support and lauded the massive investment facilitated through JICA such as the ultra-modern Advanced Research Laboratory (ARL), which is central in the COVID-19 testing operations. Professor Anang also called for continuous support for the NMIMR to effectively execute its mandate by deepening quality medical research and strengthening laboratory capacity building within the West Africa sub-region.
