IFEJ Launches 8th Edition of Flamingo Awards for Journalists

The Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ), has launched its eighth edition of the IFEJ Flamingo Awards for business and financial journalists in Ghana.

The 2022 edition is on the theme: ‘“ICT In Ghana’s Financial Accessibility and Development’.

This year, the Ultimate Winner must pick up the Best Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Feature/News Story which should show the extent to which ICT can be utilised to enhance business Development and economic growth.

Journalists, particularly financial and economic reporters who write comprehensive and accurate business news, are encouraged to enter the IFEJ Flamingo Awards.

Stories written from September 1st , 2021 – August 31, 2022 are all qualified for the awards but the final selection is depended on the awards committee jury.

Submission of articles for the awards began from yesterday 6th September to 30th September 2022, according to the Director of Programmes at IFEJ, Naa Torshie Torto.

 She added that the submission of stories could be done at the IFEJ office located on the second floor of Ga Presbytery, Jubilee House at Kuku Hill Osu, Accra. Interested journalists can also download the form(s) on the IFEJ website.

The juries of the awards committee usually focus on key areas such as originality, accuracy, quality, and excellent communication.

They also focus on quality and that would be the overall presentation of the story, the planning, angle, and arrangement of the story.

The IFEJ awards which are slated for January 2023 would award journalists in the following nine categories:

  1. Best in finance
  2. Best in Agribusiness
  3. Best in Development
  4. Best in Business/Manufacturing
  5. Best in Tourism
  6. Best in Business of Health
  7. Best in Natural Resources
  8. Best in Information Communication Technology
  9. Best in Local Economy

Launching the awards, Dr. Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, commended the management of IFEJ in shaping the course of business news reporting in the country.

Touching on the theme of the awards, he said: “The transformative role of ICT and Technology in general as demonstrated by the impact of mobile, cannot therefore be discounted”.

It is up to all of us to leverage the opportunities presented and in the case of journalists to educate and inform us the general public, the business owners, the consumers and the employees of role that ICT and Technology is playing to transform our lives”.

The President of IFEJ, Rayborn Bulley took the opportunity to thank the sponsors especially World Bank for believing in IFEJ first and supporting the ultimate award winner to cover the annual IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington DC, USA.

The reconstituted jury members for the next five years

Prof John Gatsi – Dean of Business School, University of Cape Coast ;

Daniel Koomson – Veteran Journalist and Retired Communication Manager Adb;

Dr Rev Felix Dela Klutse – A practicing senior financial journalist, editor, public relations consultant, multiple award winner;

Charity Acquah – a veteran journalist, Communication expert and consultant with corporate bodies and international organizations; and

Francis Kokutse – A practicing senior journalist of international repute, communication and media consultant and trainer of trainers.

The IFEJ is a non-profit organisation that seeks to provide qualitative analysis of the economic sector while offering necessary ammunition for policy redirection through write-ups by members.
