In response to the devastating consequences of the Akosombo Dam spillage, Ghana Link Network Services Ltd, the operators of the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) at Ghana’s Ports, has stepped forward with a generous donation of items and cash worth GH₵550,000 to aid flood victims.
The contribution, provided by Ghana Link Network Services Ltd, was presented to the Agbetikpo Camp, which currently houses approximately 1,200 displaced individuals, making it the second-largest camp for flood victims in the region.
Ghana Link’s donation includes GH₵500,000 worth of essential supplies such as food items, mattresses, and toiletries. Additionally, GH₵50,000 in cash was contributed to facilitate the mobilization of these resources to the 21 camps scattered throughout the district.
The items donated by Ghana Link encompass 250 bags of rice, 100 boxes of oil, 50 cartons of sardines, 100 blankets, 20 boxes of Dettol, 300 cartons of water bottles, 100 bags of sugar, 150 pillows, 150 mattresses, 200 packs of toiletries, and 100 sanitary towels.
Data from the National Disaster Management Office (NADMO) indicates that there are 21 camps established in the North Tongu Constituency, where the spillage’s impact has been profoundly felt.
The Akosombo Dam spillage, which began on September 15, 2023, has resulted in the displacement of approximately 29,000 people, causing immense hardship for the affected communities.
Speaking on behalf of the company’s Executive Chairman, Dr. Nick Danso Adjei, Mr. Raymond Amaglo, the Director of Operations at Ghana Link, emphasized that the donation was a heartfelt expression of empathy for those adversely affected by the spillage.
He stated, “The Chairman of Ghana Link, Dr. Nick Danso Adjei, has taken note of the devastating impact of the dam spillage on the lives and livelihoods of people in the communities surrounding the dam.
He empathizes with the persons affected by the spillage and believes there is the need to extend a helping hand.
Hence, he sent these items and cash as support from himself and his company to support the livelihood of those affected by this spillage.”
Amaglo added, “Ghana Link is extremely happy to make this donation and will continue to make more donations because we really want to see an impact in the lives of the affected persons.”
The Paramount Queen Mother of the Battor Traditional Area, Mama Ga Asiaku, received the donation on behalf of the affected individuals and expressed profound gratitude.
She said, “We are extremely grateful for your donation, thank you for coming to our aid and meeting our needs.” Representatives of North Tongu’s Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the local Assembly members also commended Ghana Link for its exemplary gesture.
Meanwhile, the Volta River Authority (VRA) has announced the conclusion of the dam spillage exercise in a press release.
VRA has affirmed its commitment to sustaining relief and rehabilitation efforts in the areas affected by the spillage.
The organization extended its heartfelt thanks to various government agencies, companies, and stakeholders that have supported the affected communities during this challenging time.
