Era of fake motor insurance is over – Bawumia

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says times that unscrupulous persons faked insurance policies for motor vehicles now belong to history.

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) in January 2020 rolled out the Motor Insurance Database (MID) policy which effectively cancelled the issuance of manual motor insurance stickers.

Addressing a townhall meeting in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region capital, Tuesday, February 11, Dr. Bawumia commended the NIC for the initiative.

“The National Insurance Commission has digitized the motor insurance database. This means that the era of fake insurance certificates is over and anyone can check the insurance status of a vehicle through a mobile phone.”

In a related development, personnel from the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate of the Police Service in Accra have undergone training on the newly introduced digitsed insurance policy.

Addressing the participants, Commissioner of Insurance, Justice Ofori, said the new policy has a comprehensive electronic database to deal with the fake insurance stickers.

The enhanced ‘look and feel’ of the new motor insurance sticker has a navy blue colour.

According to him, upon the purchase of a valid motor insurance policy, the insured will receive a text message confirming that the motor insurance policy is authentic.

Mr. Ofori further notes “…the implementation of the MID will to a large extent not only support the insurance industry but also help the Police in the effective enforcement of road traffic regulations.”
