Renovated Sunyani Airport: 5 Facts you should know

The renovated Sunyani Airport is to be officially opened for scheduled domestic flights sometime later this year. Here are five facts you should know about this airport

1.The Sunyani Airport was constructed as an airstrip and later upgraded into an airport in 1969

2.The Sunyani airport was shutdown in 2015 for renovation works, after significant defects on the runway was detected.

3.Prior to shutting it down, it was serviced by now defunct domestic airline operator Starbow

4.It  has a runway length of 1, 520meters

5.When completed, the terminal building will have the capacity to process 100 passengers per hour.

In line with GACL’s program to rehabilitate and upgrade all airports, Sunyani Airport terminal building has been expanded to accommodate modern x-ray security screening equipment.

The objective of the rehabilitation project is to, among other things, ensure that facilities and services at the airport meet all international safety and security standards.

The scope of work include rehabilitation/reconstruction and extension of existing runway, rehabilitation of existing taxi link, rehabilitation and upgrade of existing apron, resurfacing of internal roads, rehabilitation and remodeling of the existing terminal building to make space for all necessary terminal facilitation.

It will be recalled that in March 2015, the Sunyani Airport was temporarily shut down due to the extent of visible deterioration of the airfield.
