MTN Ghana has launched its MoMo Month celebrations, marking 15 years since the introduction of its revolutionary mobile financial service, MoMo.
The ceremony, held simultaneously in Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi, with subsequent events planned for Ho and Tamale, aims to express gratitude to users for their support over the years.
According to Shaibu Haruna, CEO of MTN Mobile Money Ltd., traditional banking was inaccessible to many Ghanaians, especially in remote areas, and that necessitated the introduction of mobile money services.
MoMo was born to democratize the financial sector, and it has become an indispensable part of Ghanaian lives, empowering individuals, strengthening businesses, and providing tools for SMEs to excel,” he noted.
Haruna acknowledged the role of fintech partners in driving innovation and thanked them for their contributions. He also addressed the challenges of mobile connectivity and fraud, assuring that MTN Ghana is working tirelessly to ensure overall coverage and build stronger infrastructure to maintain sanity.
The CEO emphasized the importance of customer vigilance in preventing fraud, urging users to protect their pins, avoid opening suspicious links and SMS, and avoid following instructions from strangers on the phone. He noted that MTN Ghana has introduced self-service features, including the my MoMo app, designed to enhance customer experience.
Senior Manager- Sales and Operations-at MTN Ghana, Samuel Appiah, observed that MoMo, launched in 2009, has grown to become a household name, revolutionizing financial inclusion and transforming the lives of Ghanaians.
Appiah reflected on the journey, saying, “Few people realized it would grow to become a household name and have such a profound impact on the lives of Ghanaians.”
He attributed MoMo’s success to its ability to adapt to the changing landscape of financial inclusion and harness the power of technology.
As part of the celebrations, MTN Ghana will embark on regional floats to educate customers on fraud prevention and showcase new services and product launches. Other activities include, transact and win where MoMo app users can win up to GHc1500 weekly.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders and the fintech community to drive financial inclusion and empower communities.
