Interview with Comfort Owusu, Executive Director of the Association of Rural Banks

I am Comfort Owusu, honored to serve as the Executive Director of the Association of Rural Banks (ARB) – Ghana and the first female to occupy the position since the inception of the Association over forty years ago. Hailing from Nkoranza in the Bono-East region. Personally, I am blessed with a loving family; married to Rev. Isaac Kwaku Owusu, and a mother of two daughters with three grandchildren.

Career Journey and Professional Milestone

My professional career commenced within the Ghana Tourist Board, now as the Ghana Tourism Authority. Starting as a stenographer, I navigated through various roles, eventually ascending to the position of Administrative Officer. However, destiny had charted a different course for me, leading me to the Association of Rural Banks (ARB) – Ghana.

Transitioning from the tourism sector to the dynamic arena of banking posed formidable challenges, but I embraced them with unwavering determination and profound interest in rural banking industry. Recognizing the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions, I endeavoured to promote gender diversity within the industry, while simultaneously working to elevate the image of the Association through strategic initiatives and publications. My tenure within the Association has been marked by a steadfast commitment to excellence and a fervent desire to uplift both the institution and its stakeholders.

To begin with, I must highlight the notable recognition our Association has garnered from CEOs and Directors, who acknowledge the impactful contributions it has made to the RCBs. Thus, I consider this acknowledgment as indicative of our successful efforts in enhancing the Association’s reputation. Regarding infrastructure, while our offices initially posed challenges, I am pleased to note significant improvements. Despite external factors such as the intrusion of mechanics, the overall environment has seen notable enhancements.

Challenges:
Addressing the challenges, I have encountered, it is evident that the landscape of our organization has historically been male-dominated. Upon assuming a leadership role, I was met with implicit expectations to excel, despite the prevailing notion that women may be less capable in such positions. However, I embraced this challenge as an opportunity to debunk stereotypes and demonstrate the immense potential of female leadership. Overcoming obstacles such as restricted access to information and limited autonomy, I persisted with resilience and unwavering dedication, refusing to be deterred by adversity. Through perseverance and strategic initiatives such as establishing women’s associations and facilitating national conferences for women within the Rural Banking Industry and progress has been good.

Future Perspective
Moving forward, my focus remains on promoting gender equality and empowering women within the rural banking sector. Through collaborative efforts with stakeholders and the implementation of targeted programs, we aim to foster an environment conducive to the advancement of women in leadership roles. Initiatives encompassing mentorship, skills development, and advocacy for policy reforms underscore our commitment to driving substantive change. Furthermore, prioritizing the holistic well-being of women, initiatives promoting physical, mental, and social health are integral components of our strategy. From institutionalizing aerobic sessions to advocating for access to healthcare and educational resources, our endeavours seek to empower women not only professionally but also personally, enabling them to realize their full potential.

My journey in leadership is defined by a steadfast commitment to effecting positive change and championing the rights and opportunities of women in the rural banking sector. As we forge ahead, guided by a vision of inclusivity and progress, I am confident that together, we will continue to pave the way for a more equitable and prosperous future.

Perspectives on Gender Equality and Empowerment:
Working in the finance and banking industry entails significant challenges and demands. It is imperative for women, especially those entering the field, to recognize the inherent difficulties and prepare accordingly. Maintaining a mind-set of determination and focus is essential for navigating these challenges and advancing in one’s career. Drawing inspiration from those who have succeeded before them, women should embrace the notion that they too can achieve their career aspirations. Despite obstacles encountered along the way, it is crucial not to lose sight of one’s goals and to remain proactive in seeking opportunities for growth and learning. By adopting a proactive approach and actively engaging with others in the industry, women can broaden their knowledge and skills, ultimately empowering themselves to thrive in their professional endeavours.

Personal Motivation and Values:
My driving force lies in leaving behind a positive legacy that contributes to the advancement of women in leadership roles. I am motivated to go the extra mile to ensure that women are not overlooked or underestimated in positions of responsibility. It is essential for me to advocate for the development and empowerment of women, ensuring they are properly mentored and supported to rise to managerial positions within the rural banking industry. By actively engaging with women in the industry, providing guidance, and fostering a supportive network, I aim to secure a sustainable succession plan that enables the continued progress of women in leadership roles. Despite the challenges, I remain committed to this cause, knowing that the impact will be felt long after my time.

Future Aspirations and Goals:
My vision entails witnessing a significant rise in women assuming leadership roles and exceeding societal expectations. During our recent conference, I conveyed my belief that it is entirely conceivable for a woman from the rural banking sector to ascend to the esteemed position of Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This aspiration reflects my commitment to advocating for gender inclusivity and empowering women to achieve remarkable feats in the financial sector.

Appreciation
My appreciation goes to the GIZ, BoG and ARB Apex Bank for their support on sponsoring our RCBs women leadership development programme.
