The Apex Body of Women in Poultry Value Chain (WIPVaC-Apex Ghana) together with African Women in Animal Resource Farming and Agribusiness Network (AWARFA-N Ghana) have donated crates of eggs to the male inmates of the Koforidua Central Prison in the Eastern region to mark this year’s international Women’s Day.
The donation was warmly accepted by the Prison officials who thanked the Associations for remembering these inmates on this special day and hope for more of such benevolent gesture.
International Women’s Day takes place on March 8th every year to celebrate women’s rights and inspire people to act in the ongoing fight for gender equality. It celebrates women’s contributions to society, raises awareness about the fight for gender parity, and inspires support for organizations that help women globally.
WIPVaC-Apex-Ghana together with AWARFA-N Ghana have over the years marked this day as a way of empowering women and girls in communities through donations, sensitization and creating awareness on gender equality.
This year’s International Women’s Day seeks to explore the impact of the digital gender gap on widening economic and social inequalities. The event spotlights the importance of empowering and protecting the rights of women and girls in digital spaces and addressing online and ICT -facilitated gender-based violence.
The theme for 2023 is “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equity” and a campaign theme #Embrace Equity.
The two organizations with support from GIZ-Agribiz also held a workshop in Koforidua where members expressed the importance of technology and innovation to women.
Technology has been helpful in reducing the workload for women through the existence of blenders, washing machines, mobile phones etc. In olden times, it takes days and months to hear from relatives living in the diaspora, but the story has changed with introduction of technology”, a statement by one of the members.
Others also expressed their delight in how technology and innovation has helped improve businesses.
A lot of women in businesses are leaving on the use of technology. They have been able to access international markets through social media advertisement, websites and others to sell their products and also has challenged us to be innovative in a form of adding value to our products through packaging”
Some also believed that technology was paving way for fraud and internet crimes which is on the rampage in the world.
“There are a lot of fraud and money laundering issues due to technology and some of the victims are in prison for this act, hence we need to be watchful of our children”
