Ghana set – up Climate Prosperity Plan to Tackle Climate Change and Enhance Resilience
In a significant step towards environmental sustainability and economic resilience, Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has announced a comprehensive Climate Prosperity Plan during a press briefing to close the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings.
The plan strategically balances efforts to mitigate climate change with robust adaptation measures to safeguard the nation against its impacts.
Under the ambitious plan, Ghana will deploy a series of initiatives aimed at both reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing the country’s ability to withstand climate-related challenges. Key among these initiatives is the installation of solar panels on the Bui Dam, a project that epitomizes Ghana’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions through enhanced energy efficiency.
Our focus is on mitigation to prevent further carbon emissions and adaptation to withstand the effects of climate change,” said Minister Adam. “For instance, the solar panels on the Bui Dam are a mitigation measure that will help us manage our increasing energy needs while reducing our carbon footprint.”
The Climate Prosperity Plan also places a significant emphasis on upgrading infrastructure to resist climate-induced phenomena such as flooding. The upcoming “climate budget,” as revealed by the Minister, will allocate considerable resources to infrastructural projects aimed at increasing the nation’s climate resilience.
We are looking at the kind of roads we build; flooding is a consequence of our current infrastructure, and we need to change that,” Minister Adam explained. “In our next climate budget, we will allocate funds for projects intended to build resilience and withstand climate shocks.”
The financial specifics of the plan, including the exact allocations for various sectors, are still under finalization. However, the Minister confirmed that the government’s strategy would encompass a broad spectrum of initiatives aimed at both reducing emissions and enhancing adaptive capacity across diverse sectors.
The Climate Prosperity Plans involve collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and civil society organizations to develop and implement climate-smart investments and policies. These measures are designed not only to curb greenhouse gas emissions but also to create jobs and improve the quality of life for the Ghanaian people.
