The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Dr. Sulemanu Koney, has emphasized the need for Human Resource (HR) practitioners in the mining sector to play a leading role in driving sustainability initiatives.
He made this call at the 6th Biennial Conference of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, themed “Navigating the New Normal: HR Innovations for Sustainable Mining”.

Dr. Koney acknowledged the multifaceted challenges facing the industry, including talent shortages, skill mismatches, and the need for digital transformation.
He noted that despite these challenges, opportunities abound in harnessing technological innovation, embracing sustainable practices, and fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion.
Dr. Koney stressed that sustainable issues must be the focus of mining companies, and HR practitioners have a critical role to play in driving this agenda.
He urged HR professionals to develop innovative strategies to address the industry’s challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities.
We need to invest in training programs that equip our workforce with skills to thrive in an increasingly digital world,” he emphasized.
In a related development, the President of the Chamber, Edem Akafia, announced that the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) is set to receive a US$2 million boost from the Ghana Chamber of Mines Tertiary Education Fund.
This funding represents the second tranche of the fund and will be disbursed starting in 2025 over five years. The contributions are drawn from the Chamber’s producing member companies and aimed at strengthening UMaT’s capacity to produce skilled graduates for the mining sector.
