Climate change may cause hunger in Ghana

Climate change advocate for the Institute for Climate Justice, James Deku has stated that, climate change may cause hunger in the country due to its excessiveness.

He mentioned in an interview with Kafui Dey on GTV’s Breakfast Show that statistics have proven that globally, there is a high risk of hunger, of which Africa is more at risk.

Statistics is telling us that, we are 80% at risk of getting hunger globally, and one of the most hit is Africa, and Ghana is not exempt,” he said.

According to him, both crop production and animal farming solely rely on the rainfall in Ghana, and when the rainfall patterns change or take a nose dive, the whole country experiences a fall in harvest.

For us, the key dependent being rainfall, if these patterns are distorted, trust me it will affect the food that we produce”, he mentioned during the interview. “Excessive drought which is also as a result of our temperature getting warmer and warmer and that is also what is affecting a lot of animals,” he added.

Deku further pointed out that, gases that emanate from the excessive usage of fertilizer contribute largely to climate change in this part of our world.
He therefore stressed that in as much as the government needs to invest in research and development to predict the climate, Ghanaians have a major role to play a role in sustaining the climate.

He added that, when we all play our role diligently, it can help the government implement more measures in the communication and fight against activities that contribute highly to the depletion of the ozone.

Statistics has proven that, this climate change is mostly caused by human activities and that makes it a responsibility for all of us to make sure that we reduce it, ” He urged.
