US President Donald J. Trump has reaffirmed Washington’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the sole basis for resolving the long-running regional dispute, according to a statement issued by Morocco’s Royal Office.
The position was conveyed in a message addressed to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Throne Day.

“The United States is unequivocal: We recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and support Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution,” President Trump said in the message.
He added that any alternative approach would merely prolong the status quo, describing such an outcome as unacceptable.
“This dispute must end now, and the United States will continue to push toward that goal,” the message stated.
President Trump also congratulated King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people on Throne Day, while highlighting the longstanding relationship between the two countries.
“This year, we celebrate 250 years of American history and enduring friendship with Morocco — a bond forged in trust and mutual respect,” he said.
The US president praised King Mohammed VI’s leadership, describing it as an “anchor of stability.” He also highlighted Morocco’s commitment to peace, counter-extremism efforts and regional security, as well as its role in the Abraham Accords.
Trump said Washington and Rabat would work together to strengthen security in the Sahel, a region facing persistent political instability and extremist violence.
The message also placed strong emphasis on bilateral economic cooperation.
President Trump said Morocco’s economic vision was creating new opportunities for prosperity in both countries and announced that he had instructed his administration to encourage economic and social development in partnership with Morocco, including in Western Sahara.
He identified energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals and defence as key areas for future cooperation, stressing that American technology and innovation would continue to support Morocco in strategic sectors.
“Together, we are ushering in a new era, one that prioritizes the interests of our two peoples,” the message concluded.
