The total number of mobile voice subscriptions in the country for the month of January 2020, has gone beyond 41 million, the telecoms regulator has revealed.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) in its latest industry information said the four mobile network operators account for about 41.4 million subscriptions.
This figure represents over 133 percent penetration over Ghana’s population of 30.3 million. The huge penetration has been attributed to the use of multiple SIM cards which means one person has more than a single SIM card.
MTN Ghana, the country’s largest mobile operator, recorded subscriptions totaling 23,150,485 representing a percentage increase of 2.64 percent from December 2019’s figure of 22,555,848.
MTN’s subscriber base meant that its market share for the month under review was 55.95%.
MTN was followed by Vodafone in a distant second with a little over nine million subscriptions. The company lost more than 46,000 subscriptions in the period under review – leaving the company with a market share of 21.93 percent.
Also, AirtelTigo’s voice subscriptions decreased from 8.45 million as at the end of December 2019 to 8.42 million as at the end of January 2020; indicating a percentage decrease of 0.29% — leaving their market share for the month under review at 20.37 percent.
Apart from MTN, the other gainer was Glo which increased its voice subscriptions from 725,773 as of the end of December 2019 to 726,149 at the end of January 2020. With a percentage increase of 0.05%, their total market share for the month under review was 1.75%
